What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium fixture that functions as a replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone and acts as a foundation for artificial teeth like crowns, bridges, or dentures. Ultimately the implant acts as an anchor for a dental prosthesis.

How it works

The implant is a metal screw made of titanium. The implant fuses with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. Bone grows around the implant over time, holding it in place. An abutment is placed on the top of the dental implant, which connects it to the prosthetic tooth. Then a custom crown, made to look like a natural tooth, covers the dental implant.
