The zygoma (cheek bone) is one of a pair of bones on the upper right and left side of the face. The Zygoma helps support the eye sockets. These cheek bones give shape and structure to the face and are connected to the jaw bones.
Zygoma bones are attached to the masseter muscle (the muscle that opens and closes the jaw) and play an important role in mastication (chewing).
Zygomatic, also known as Zygoma implants, are longer than standard dental implants that transverse the upper area of your jaw to anchor into the underside of the cheekbones through the sinus space. They are inserted in the cheekbones though the mouth. In the most sever of cases, two zygomatic implants may be placed on each side, which is called a Quad Zygoma.
This approach is used for severely resorbed upper jaws and is designed to facilitate immediate rehabilitation with fixed prosthetic teeth.
