Life events and a busy schedule can cause preventive health care to fall by the wayside. Then a painful symptom reminds you it’s been a while since your last checkup. It’s tempting to put off seemingly minor dental issues until your schedule lightens up. But the warning signs below shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is especially true if you’re managing a chronic condition, like diabetes. Oral health should not be neglected.
Here are seven signs that you need to see a dentist.
Pain when eating
Difficulty chewing or swallowing is not normal and could mean you have an infection. Try eating soft foods and liquids like soup, until you can see your dentist.
You have swelling
Swelling in your mouth, face or neck can mean something is wrong with your oral health or jaw.
Your gums are causing problems
If your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth, are swollen and tender, or you have a family history of gum disease, it’s time to make an appointment.
You hide your smile
If you’re self-conscious about grey or black teeth or have a missing tooth then it’s time to see your dentist.
You’ve had work done
If you have fillings, crowns, dental implants or dentures, see your dentist regularly to make sure everything is in great shape.
You have ongoing medical issues
If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or an eating disorder, or you are undergoing medical treatment such as radiation, chemotherapy or hormone replacement therapy, you should schedule regular appointments with your dentist.
You’re pregnant
Oral health should be part of your routine doctor visits if you are pregnant because pregnancy can make women more prone to periodontal disease and cavities during those nine months.
If you experience any of these, schedule an appointment with your dentist.
